Leonida and Vice City: The Setting of GTA VI
Updated September 28, 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in the fictional US state of Leonida, a sun-soaked, exaggerated version of Florida. Rockstar's own tagline describes it as the sunniest place in America, with its darkest side waiting underneath.
Vice City
Vice City is the main city, returning from the series' past in a modern form. It is the city players will spend much of their time in, and Rockstar's promotional material centres on it. Neon, beaches, nightlife and boat traffic are visible in the trailers.
Beyond the city
The story stretches across the whole state. Places mentioned in Rockstar's material and the Extended Look include:
- The Keys: where Jason worked for local drug runners before the story begins.
- Leonida Penitentiary: the prison Lucia leaves at the start of her story.
- Nightlife and music venues: connected to characters such as Dre'Quan Priest.
- Motels, stores and highways: used for robberies and hideouts.
Density over size
Rockstar has not published an official map size. Coverage of interviews suggests the focus is density and interactivity, with the world reacting to what you do, rather than a headline number in square kilometres. Any map-size figures you see online are estimates from leaks or fans.
Why the setting matters
Reviews and previews suggest the map is not just a backdrop. Hideouts, safehouses and protected places tie into how the game works, as we cover in our systems guide.
What we still do not know
- The official size of the map and how it compares with San Andreas or GTA V.
- Which locations are open from the start.
- Whether the world changes over time after launch.
